Trialsmasters Gary Heyer and Mark Barnette’s penultimate event of the CVOTC 2022 season was pretty
much the perfect day. Once again, a day in the woods at Logs and Ledges was a great day indeed.
Weather was exactly what you’d hope for in the fall, brisk in the morning and then warming to the mid-
70s.
Twenty-eight (28) riders endeavored to clean at least one of the eight sections ridden in three loops;
every rider was successful in achieving their endeavor! Based on the results of the previous event at
Logs and Ledges in March, the Expert and Advanced riders had about twice the challenge with scores
increasing at least 2-fold. Sportsman and Intermediate lines were a bit easier this time around with two
riders achieving single digit days and a couple of Sportsman riders achieving the coveted “clear loop”.
The week before the event every section was cleared of fallen limbs, sticks and leaves. After a week of
fall weather, including a hard frost, the leaves were back. At times during the event, it seemed to be
raining leaves and previously cleared sections were again carpeted. Despite the layer of organic matter
traction was surprising good. Streamside ascents mostly went better than planned and descents were
variable depending on how much you trusted your brakes. Some descents were quicker than the
ascents.
A regular feature of Logs and Ledges is the transitions into and out of creeks. Luckily for all, it has been
pretty dry this autumn so there was not too much slick stuff to contend with and where there was, it
was not deep so traction was there for those who waited with their feet on the pegs. On the streamside
ledge sections, it was much easier to ride up and down than walk, most of the time. I think one
Advanced rider saw his life flash before him descending a rock ledge in section 7.
Scores were very close within classes with a dab or two being the difference in finish place. Our
Trialsmasters should be proud of achieving their aim to present each class with a reasonable challenge
and some well deserved rewards. Allowing every rider to clean at least one section and two riders
achieving perfect loop was so very kind.
CVOTC continues to see new faces at our events, our future is bright. I hope you enjoyed yourself, tell
your friends what they’re missing and be sure to come to the season ending event at Lawless Creek.
